How to turn “OFF” your alarm system in an emergency

Alarm system emergency silencing shut OFF procedures

How to deactivate your alarm system in an emergency if your sirens are continuously sounding

To do this procedure find the main unit, not to be mistaken with the arm/disarm keypad. The control panel maybe found in a cupboard or similar type area which contains the main wiring termination point to the circuit board (or commonly known as the motherboard) and the rechargeable back-up battery. Now locate the plugin transformer which may be next to the unit or in a power point somewhere in the building and then switch off at the power point. If you cannot find this you may need to go to the main electric fuse box and switch off the mains switch. Now open the panel cover. It maybe secured with screws or contain a key lock. There is no danger of getting zapped inside this unit as low voltage is used however please wear hearing protection when doing this procedure as the sirens may sound very loudly (you may activate more sirens). Once the cover is open, locate the back-up battery ( similar to a brick like size ).
Disconnect the Alarm System Battery. This should slide off from the lug with little force and no tool required.
Your alarm system should now be silenced.

The second option is if you can`t locate the control panel power point, you need to manually disconnect (or cut) the keypad cabling, the external (outside) siren and internal siren wiring to silence the alarm system. You can locate these devices very easy as they all will be soundly loud in volume. The pad maybe beeping fast so silencing this device will be required.

The most common reasons why a security alarm system false alarms?

  • alarm sensor and other devices malfunctioning
  • rusted external outside siren box tamper
  • outdated aging smoke alarms which should be replaced after 10 years in Victoria
  • not knowing the alarm system in the case you have moved into a new property and you are trying to use it) contact us. we can help you
  • faulty security cabling due to rats, possums, and other rodents
  • detector issues due to spiders, bugs and insects crawling directly over the sensor itself
  • faulty main circuit board or plugin power supply transformer due to lightning strikes and power surges
  • an old alarm battery which has never been changed in years
  • main alarm units which have been installed in the ceiling cavity to homes and business (with the danger of lead acid and lithium batteries overheating especially in the hot summer causing a fire risk). see photo below

Best tips to why you should never have your alarm panel and battery installed in your roof cavity

In reference to our last bullet comment we have seen time over time many burglar panel batteries installed in the roof that have there casing cracked, casing buckled and battery terminal lugs damaged due to excessive heat which can therefore result to safety issues. You may also have experienced this before with the alarm blasting off loudly. How the heck are you even supposed to disconnect the battery to turn the alarm off quickly in case of an emergency (very annoying indeed especially if this happens unexpectedly 3 am at night! ).
